Becoming a Christian
Following Jesus Christ is not a program — it is a person, a promise, and a people.
The African Methodist Episcopal Church confesses what the historic Church has confessed since the apostles: that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, who for us and for our salvation was crucified, died, was buried, and on the third day rose again. To become a Christian is to entrust yourself to him — to repent of sin, to believe the gospel, and to receive his Spirit.
"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9) Faith is not a feeling first — it is a confession. Speak it, even quietly, even unsure.
Repentance is more than regret — it is a turning. Turning from sin. Turning from the old life. Turning toward Christ and his way. The Holy Spirit gives both the grace and the desire to turn.
Baptism is the sign and seal of God's claim on you. After baptism comes a lifetime of discipleship: reading Scripture, praying, gathering with the people of God, taking the Lord's Supper, and serving in love.
Pray a simple prayer in your own words: confess Jesus as Lord, ask forgiveness for your sins, and ask the Holy Spirit to begin a new work in you. Then tell someone — and let us walk with you from here.
